Long concerned with revealing the social, cultural and political forces that impact the natural world, Ruth Beer’s Seep/Swell is a culmination of Beer’s multi-year, transdisciplinary, ecological art research. An exhibition in two parts, Seep, at the Art Gallery at Evergreen, focusses on Beer’s sculptural explorations centring copper and oil, and Swell, at the Burnaby Art Gallery, explores the role of water within our resource-driven economy. Beer uses copper wire, magnetic tape and cotton directly in her weavings and experiments with augmented reality to animate her woven images, hinting at current risks, but also sharing optimism for a chance for renewal.
