DOUGLAS COUPLAND

West Vancouver Art Museum

Catalogue accompanying Douglas Coupland’s exhibition Rabbit Lane, a series of photographic mis-en-scenes inspired by his 1998 novel, Girlfriend in a Coma. The photographs feature original West Vancouver homes familiar from Coupland’s childhood, cars and clothes borrowed from the community, and volunteer models, who had read Coupland’s novel at some point and ‘got’ what he was thematically after — a sense of a past becoming history with pretty much none of it being preserved. Interspersing the photographs with quotes from the book, the design reflected Coupland’s exploration of how time can be condensed and contracted to change our perceptions.

Text excerpts from Girlfriend in a Coma, essays by Douglas Coupland and Hilary Letwin
