Western Front Media Art catalogues

These catalogues mark the beginning of a series from Western Front's Media Arts program documenting the Front's vast video archives (Eternal Network) and the work from artist residencies and telematic experiments (Scrambled Bites Art's Birthday). As a series the catalogues connect by format, type treatment and 2-colour brashness. They separate in their treatment of time.

Time is linear in Eternal Network indicated by a vertical running stream of video grabs. The video-stream jumps a column for each of the 4 essays, bumping the 3 text columns (of three languages: English, French and Japanese) over one column as well. The viewer can tell which essay they're reading by which column the video stream is inhabiting.

Using interleaving chunks of white and blue pages, time is circular in Scrambled Bites Art's Birthday, essentially two catalogues in one. When white the viewer is reading Scrambled Bites (the artist residencies). When blue, the reader is part of Art's Birthday (networked social spaces created by artists from around the world using sensors, software and robotics that respond to data flow from one site to another). Art's Birthday is illustrated with web cam grabs broadcast from the worldwide January 17, 2004 gallery celebrations (indicated by GMT +/- hours).
