With a chef as inclusive and friendly as Michael Smith, his cookbook wanted to have a sense of ease and pleasure in addition to being super-clear. Focussing on the typography, using a heavier weight type for the recipes kept them the focus, while a lighter type for additional “hints”, “feel free to try” and “goes well with” text allowed a lot of extra information to be added to the page without cluttering the recipes.
